The Eames Lounge Chair is commonly considered a high point in mid century functional furniture art. It is universally recognized as one of the most important icons of 20th century furniture design. This two piece set represents the zenith of Charles and Ray Eames’ efforts to create a club chair using the molded plywood technology that they originated in the ’40s. In Charles Eames’ words, the idea was a chair with the “warm, receptive look of a well-used first baseman’s mitt.” Their vision created the penultimate lounge set, timelessly blending old-fashioned comfort and futuristic modernism.

Charles Eames was born in 1907 in Saint Louis, Missouri and briefly studied architecture at Washington University in St. Louis on an architectural scholarship. He proposed studying Frank Lloyd Wright to his professors, and when he would not cease his interest in modern architects, he was dismissed from the university. In the report describing why he was dismissed from the university, a professor wrote the comment, “His views were too modern.”
