Eames 3 Seat Sofa

Eames 3 Seat Sofa

When Charles and Ray Eames designed the Eames Aluminum Management Chair and Side Chair (1958), they created a revolution in seating that has lost none of its edge. These chairs were originally developed as a special project for a private residence being designed by Eero Saarinen and Alexander Girard. Moving away from the Eameses’ shell forms of the 1940s, the designers combined a newly affordable aluminum frame with a sling seat that subtly conforms to the body’s shape.

The seat-back suspension was a major technical achievement and represented a departure from the concept of the chair as a solid shell. Wonderfully comfortable, strong, yet lightweight, the chairs became the basis for several other Eames designs, including the Soft Pad chairs.

With a grand sense of adventure, Charles and Ray Eames turned their curiosity and boundless enthusiasm into creations that established them as a truly great husband-and-wife design team. Their unique synergy led to a whole new look in furniture. Lean and modern. Playful and functional. Sleek, sophisticated, and beautifully simple. That was and is the “Eames look.”

The Aluminum group is available in management, side, executive, and lounge models. Their classic lines and comfortable suspension keep them in demand for all kinds of places, from contemporary homes to elegant offices to hip start ups.

In the 1950s, the pair of designers would continue their work in architecture and modern furniture design, often (like in the earlier molded plywood work) pioneering innovative technologies, such as the fiberglass and plastic resin chairs and the wire mesh chairs designed for Herman Miller.

Eames Aluminum Arm Chair

Their offices operated for more than four decades (1943-88) at 901 Washington Boulevard in Venice, California, and included a number of remarkable designers, like Don Albinson and Deborah Sussman. Among the many important designs originating there are the molded-plywood DCW (Dining Chair Wood) and DCM (Dining Chair Metal with a plywood seat) (1945), Lounge Chair (1956), the Aluminum Group furniture (1958) and as well as the Chaise (1968), designed for Charles’s friend, film director Billy Wilder, as well as molded plywood leg splints for the US Navy, the playful Do-Nothing Machine (1957), an early solar energy experiment, and a number of toys. Comes complete with a dazzling highly polished chrome aluminum frame!

Frank Lloyd Wright (born Frank Lincoln Wright, June 8, 1867 – April 9, 1959) was an American architect, interior designer, writer and educator, who designed more than 1,000 projects, which resulted in more than 500 completed works.

American architect Frank Lloyd Wright played a leading role in transforming the practice of architecture early in the 20th century. Trained as an engineer at the University of Wisconsin, but strongly drawn to architecture, he began his career as an architect in Chicago, working in the offices of Dankmar Adler and Louis Sullivan. At the age of 29 he set up his own practice and began work on a number of residential projects, chiefly in the Oak Park area of Chicago. These “Prairie Houses,” designed in the early 1900’s, are characterized by their use of natural materials – stone, brick and wood. Their low elevations, and gently sloping roofs create a strong horizontal emphasis.

Wright claimed to build “organic” architecture that seemed to grow naturally out of the surrounding landscape. He believed the internal space, furnishings and decorative details of a house to be intrinsic to its architecture. Many of his projects incorporated site specific furniture and fittings. These unified projects were intended to possess a natural “organic” beauty that would promote the life of the human spirit. Instead of walls, furnishings were often used as spatial dividers, thereby creating more open interiors and a sense of flowing space.

Wright’s preoccupation with geometric forms and intersecting planes in his architecture, led him to develop a similar style for furniture. For example, a series of metal desks and chairs designed for the Larkin Building in Buffalo, New York, were designed to be functionally and visually unified with their surroundings. They were also among the first metal items for indoor use that did not mimic wood. The chairs were made of painted steel with leather upholstered seats and rigidly geometric backs with square perforations. In addition to furniture, Wright designed stained glass windows, ceramics and glass, metalwork and textiles. Wright’s work became distanced from its Arts & Crafts origins as he began to explore the structural and decorative potential of industrial concrete blocks which he used in the design of the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo and four houses in Los Angeles.

Mid Century Style Elliptical Coffee Table

Mid Century Style Elliptical Coffee Table

This iconic table is a mid-century 1951 classic inspired design. It is also referred to as the “surfboard table”. This elongated unit illustrates the whimsical playfulness that characterizes the work of this legendary American designer. It also reveals the practical side to Ray and Charles Eames – their desire to create furniture that would become a part of a life lived with minimalism and splendor. This 6’ foot table sets the stage for a bowl of fresh fruit, a special work of art or a big art book. Its light wire base and long lean silhouette look just as totally modern today as then.

Eames was born in 1907 in Saint Louis, Missouri. He briefly studied architecture at Washington University in St. Louis on an architectural scholarship. He proposed studying Frank Lloyd Wright to his professors, and when he would not cease his interest in modern architects, he was dismissed from the university. In the report describing why he was dismissed from the university, a professor wrote the comment, “His views were too modern.”

This iconic piece is constructed with a chrome steel frame, birch plywood surface with a melamine top in your choice of black or white colors. This is a perfect copy (and is not a Herman Miller release) of the same unit at a fraction of the price!

$235 EAMES PLYWOOD DINING CHAIR METAL LEGS 800 416 3635

Gibraltar Furniture (www.gibraltarfurniture.com) features the Eames Style Bent Plywood Dining Chair with Metal Legs for only $235

Plywood Dining Chair with Metal Legs

Plywood Dining Chair with Metal Legs

The superb molded ply chair was hailed by Time Magazine as the Best Design of the 20th Century. DWR sells the DCM for $399.00 – $679.00. Designers and architects consider Gibraltar (800 416-3635) an insider secret weapon for blue chip merchandise at warehouse prices.

Along with the Lounge Chair and Ottoman in leather, this may be one of the most well recognized pieces in modern design. Low-slung, with an expertly crafted molded plywood seat and back, this chair is extremely comfortable and built for longevity. This chair is considered a breakthrough in modern design.

The piece was designed using technology for molding plywood that the designer developed prior to, and during, The Second World War. Previous to the American involvement in the war the architect entered a line of furniture into the Museum of Modern Art’s “Organic Furniture Competition” in 1940. The competition was set up to explore the natural evolution of furniture in response to the rapidly changing world. This entry was chosen as the winner of the competition.

However, production of the initially designed chairs was postponed due to production difficulties, and then by the United States entry into WWII.

This interruption proved fortuitous to the designer. He began making molded plywood splints for the U.S. Air Force. The splints were modeled after his own leg and allowed him to hone the technique of molding the plywood into complex curves. The plywood series was a result of this experience.

Initially the makers set out to find a solution to providing affordable, comfortable furniture that could be easily mass produced. Thew architects entries into the Organic Furniture competition were designed to have the seat and backrest joined in a singe ‘shell’.

The result was a comfortable chair with a sleek and modern appearance. The seat was joined to the lumbar support and legs with a series of four heavy rubber washers with nuts embedded in them (later these came to be called ‘shock mounts’). The shock mounts were glued to the underside of the seat, and screwed in through the bottom of the chair. The backrest was also attached using shock mounts. The rubber mounts were pliable, allowing the backrest to flex when the chair is occupied. This was one of the first examples of a chair with a responsive backrest.

Even though the plywood chair was a compromise it still constituted a successful design. Following the LCW the designer created a family of plywood chairs. The all-plywood Dining Chair Wood (DCW) was constructed in the same manner as the LCW, but with a narrower seat, and longer legs.

The Lounge Chair Metal (LCM) and Dining Chair Metal (DCM)were constructed of the same plywood seats and backrests as the LCW & DCW set on a welded metal frame.
DWR sells the DCM for several hundred dollars more. Gibraltar Furniture offers the same unlicensed reproduction for only $239.

Q: ARE YOUR CLASSIC PRODUCTS COPIES OR ORIGNIALS?

A: We often get the question: “Are your pieces original?”

We sell many items that are fully licensed products from the official sources.

We also feature many lower cost alternatives for customers who are looking for cost effective options

All of our products are “mint in box” brand new items. (Original vintage products would be very expensive products to obtain. A few authentic, old originals are found in museums, or sell at astronomic, (but realistic) prices at auctions or at antique stores. Often times these pieces are often in very bad shape as a result of years of wear and tear.)

Instead Gibraltar offers both authentic and also high quality reproductions, at factory direct prices on all these pieces! Many of these items are “reproductions” of old designs. Our design experts have exactly copied each and every detail and faithfully executed all of the scale, aspects, and lines of these masterpieces.

Careful attention has been given to maintaining the same look, feel, and style of the Bauhaus icons that define modernism. You will be getting a perfectly made modern art piece, crafted in the European tradition, at a price you can’t beat!

We use overseas factories to achieve these results. We use due diligence to insure that all the right tools are used in this process. Despite the designers’ intention to create furniture which can easily be produced mechanically, the creation of modern classics requires considerable skilled hand labor and a wide variety of different production steps. We employ only perfect manufacturing methods in order to bend tubes and to make upholstery that keeps its shape for decades. The results are master pieces that ring true to the originals.

Our overseas factories use optimum methods to reproduce these beautiful Bauhaus and Modern Classics Furniture in a way so you can enjoy them year after year.

To illustrate, we offer the Barcelona series at our store. Mies van der Rohe designed the Lounge Chair and Ottoman for the German Pavilion at the International Exhibition of 1929 in Barcelona, Spain. The “X”-shaped Mies Lounge Chair and Ottoman features sleek minimalist line styling which produces a perfect blend of art and function. Gibraltar’s Mies Lounge Chair and Ottoman is made of heavy gauge solid stainless steel seamlessly welded and polished to a high luster, It features comfortable high density fire-retardant polyurethane foam wrapped in Dacron, enclosed in ticking, and encased in fine imported 100% Italian leather.

Many of the classics have undergone some construction changes since they were designed in the 20’s and 30’s. Today’s materials and tools allow for construction as crisp as the designers envisioned, but could not necessarily achieve due to the state of yesterdays technology. Many problems have occurred in older pieces when metal fatigue has resulted in damaged frames which can no longer be used. Our modern construction technique produces a metal frame with greater strength in its joints. This means your furniture, will be sturdier than the originals.

Our reproductions are very high quality new items designed for daily use. They are not numbered or stamped to justify the tripling of prices. If you purchase an item like this, you are actually paying for a license fee that is no longer required. The manufacture of such pieces is charging you a premium for a royalty that once went to a designer. Now that these designs have been paced into the public domain a patent payment is unnecessary. However, instead of lowering the price points on these editions the fabricators are happy to hold onto your money and pocket the difference. They will not lower their price levels to reflect this change to not offend their previous customers. Instead they are happy to charge thousands of dollars more for the same items that we sell for a fraction of the price.

Our entire pieces feature high quality imported premium heavy gauge steel. Ultra-Premium #304 Solid flat bar stock Stainless Steel pieces are used in each of our units. These are then hand polished to a super brilliant chrome style finish. Our frames are NOT made using lower cost carbon steel, which may be chrome-plated hollow tubes and then bolted/screwed together. Over the years this chrome will start to peel and corrode leaving you with an ugly unit.

All of our reproductions are made using 100% imported Italian leather. Multiple colors and grades of premium top grain Italian leather are available for your design requirements. We sources our hides from the same supplier that provides leather for Mercedes Benz and BMW automobiles Every square of leather is hand selected, piped, tufted and individually sewn by expert leather craftsmen Each piece is true to form, comfortable, and feature a luxurious cushion system.

Naturally there is a range in quality of the reproductions on the market. Be assured Gibraltar are tops in quality in every possible way! Today classic furniture is produced by many different manufacturers, some with great care and attention to details, others with less care. Many lower cost releases will compromise quality by using vinyl, pig leather, or low cost Chinese inferior hides.

Copy or original? We call the items what they truly are: “reproductions” of old design, no matter who produces them today. Our items do live up to all modern expectations on appearance and durability, even under intense scrutiny. They are all New Reproductions of Modern Classics at a price that can’t be beat!

Q: WHERE ARE YOUR REPRODUCTIONS MADE?

A: We sell these products from two main sources.

1. Italian leather, Italian stainless Steel, European construction. We source these models from Italy viaGordon International. We use 100% Italian Leather and 100% stainless steel frames. As Italian labor is more costly than non -European overseas sources the cost corresponding goes up. Please visit http://www.gordoninternational.com for pricing info. It takes 15-20 hours to pay these chairs. Labor in Europe is about $30 per hour. This makes the total cost higher. However, we mark down all of these models and the price that you will pay will be 30% off of the list price. We deep discount all of these models as we are a factory direct internet wholesaler.

2. Italian leather, Italian stainless Steel, Non-European construction. We source these models from our own overseas factory. We use 100% Italian leather and 100% stainless steel frames. As overseas labor is less expensive than European workmen the total price goes down accordingly. It takes 15-20 hours to pay these chairs. Non-European labor is about $3 per hour. This makes the total cost lower. We deep discount all of these models as we are a factory direct internet wholesaler.

The quality is virtually the same, the materials are the same, and the end product is the same. Therefore the choice is yours.
